DESIGN / RE-DESIGN

At Native Bloom, we have been designing, building and maintaining gardens in Santa Fe and the surrounding areas since 1994. Our intention is to create, improve and maintain smart, beautiful gardens within the confines of our south western climate. In most cases, the underlying challenges of the site and ecology become the inspiration for the design.

We use micro climate and water catchment strategies, while the bulk of our plant menu is native and xeric. The first step in the design process is an interview between the designer and the owner to organize, clarify and explore possibilities and potentialities. The next step is an assessment of the site. At this point, we take into consideration:

  • water use

  • heat saturation points

  • identify microclimates to maximize water use and thermal benefits and drawbacks

  • appropriate botanical choices

  • hardscape selection

  • composition of space, color and form

  • application of permacultural concepts

  • water catchment strategies

  • the lay of the land

  • water shed throughout the property

  • view shed

  • light shed

  • aesthetics

  • existing structures and flora

  • budget considerations

  • environmental challenges and benefits of the site

There are continuing discussions with the owners throughout the creative process. All of the elements mentioned above are combined, examined, and used as stepping stones toward the form and function of the final vision. The plan then unfolds with the designer's experienced and careful eye and decision-making process.

We aim to design and create outdoor spaces that are informed by nature, art, and the client's desires and tastes.
